US to Declare Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps a Terrorist Group- Report

"If you are doing business with the IRGC, you will be bankrolling terrorism", Trump said. But Tehran was quick to retaliate and blacklisted under the same label the United States military forces.

It is the first time that the US has designated a part of another government as a terrorist organization.

Gen. Ali Jafari on Sunday warned, "if (the Americans) make such a stupid move, the U.S. Army and American security forces stationed in West Asia (Middle-East) will lose their current status of ease and serenity", according to Fars.

Much of the turmoil we see around the world is a direct result of the actions of the IRGC and state sponsorship of terrorism by Iran.

Defense officials know that Iran's IRGC designation as a terrorist group is long overdue.

It is the first time the United States has labelled another nation's military as a terrorist organisation.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has pushed for the change in US policy as part of the Trump administration's tough stance toward Tehran.

Relations between Iran and the US have been tense for a while, especially since Trump withdrew a year ago from the two nations' Obama-era nuclear deal.

"The Middle East can not be more stable and peaceful without a weakened IRGC", the official said.

Trump said the decision "underscores the fact that Iran's actions are fundamentally different from those of other governments" and vowed to continue increasing financial pressure on Tehran until "it abandons its malign and outlaw behaviour".

"This historic step will deprive the world's leading state sponsor of terror the financial means to spread misery and death around the world", he said, warning that businesses with a presence in Iran or engaged with its companies will have to take extra steps to ensure they are not violating USA sanctions.

The department now designates 60 groups, such as al-Qaida and Daesh and their various affiliates, Hezbollah and numerous militant Palestinian factions, as "foreign terrorist organizations".

"In the past, part of the Guard Corps, known as the Quds Force, has been targeted by Washington", NPR's Peter Kenyon reports.

But some Pentagon officials, including Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen Joe Dunford, had expressed concerns about troop safety, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Iran warned it will take reciprocal action against Washington for its move against the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the country's most powerful security organisation. "Iran's influence in the Middle East and its success in fighting against Islamic State are the reasons behind this designation", state TV said, without quoting a specific official.

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has welcomed the USA decision to label Iran's Revolutionary Guards a "terrorist organization" for allegedly financing and promoting terrorism in the region.

The IRGC designation is seen as the latest in a series of steps Mr. Trump has taken to boost Mr. Netanyahu's fortunes, including US recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights. They understand that the clock on the Trump administration is ticking and that their chance of overthrowing the Iranian regime will slip away in 18 months if the president isn't re-elected.
