The Youth Climate Strike will take place in more than 130 cities in the USA, and in 90 countries.

The strikes have gained prominence and visibility in recent months across Europe, culminating with Thunberg's nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize earlier this week.

"On climate change, we have to acknowledge that we have failed", she told global economic leaders in Davos.

In Utah County, students from Mountain View, Timpview, Timpanogos, Orem and Skyridge high schools plan to host a Youth Climate Strike on the steps of the Provo Historic Courthouse Friday.

"The people in office now are not going to be here for the true effects of climate change", said Olivia Porrill, of Gardendale, who is a senior at the Alabama School of Fine Arts.

The United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released a bombshell report in November that found even the most stringent climate change goals will not be met by 2030 unless aggressive action is taken by world leaders.

Organizers said they hope staging the event during the school day will signal the importance that students attach to fighting climate change.

Students flooded into the streets of Wellington, Sydney, Bangkok and Hong Kong carrying placards that read "There is no planet B", "You're destroying our future" and "If you don't act like adults, we will". By December, more than 20,000 students had taken on Thunberg's mantle, striking in at least 270 cities. She began holding solitary demonstrations outside the Swedish parliament a year ago.

Greta Thunberg, who was named one of Time's Most Influential Teens of 2018, reportedly landed on the list of nominees this year after three Norwegian lawmakers put her name up, according to Norwegian media outlet VG.
