It will be the last of a trio of supermoons that kicked off the first three months of 2019. What's the science? Well according to NASA, these are a few of the contributing factors that make a tiresome, regular moon; super.
Wednesday's supermoon will be fully visible at 9:43 pm ET, according to EarthSky. A few hours earlier, at 5:58 p.m., the spring equinox marks the end of winter.
Supermoons occur when the moon is full or almost full and it's at its closest point in its orbit around earth, also known as its perigee, said Quinn Sykes, manager of Boston University's Judson B. Coit Observatory.
"The moon has its own orbital mechanics, so this is just when it happened to fall this year", he said. It's also the first supermoon in almost 20 years to fall near the spring equinox.Читайте также: ‘It’s disgusting’: Whale found with almost 100 pounds of plastic in stomach
The Worm Moon reportedly got its name due to the ground beginning to thaw and earthworms reappearing, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac. This will be the third appearance of a supermoon this year, following the supermoon eclipse on January 20 and February's full supermoon, which was the biggest full moon until 2026. It will also be the last supermoon we will see this year. The moon will be approximately 220,000 miles from Earth, however, binoculars or a telescope will come in handy to spot the "Super Worm Moon" on March 20.
The moon is also special for another reason.
While the moon will be officially full for Wednesday's rise, it will appear full on Tuesday and Thursday nights, as well.
The arrival of spring and the supermoon will also almost coincide with an asteroid passing close to Earth, according to the Minor Planet Center.При любом использовании материалов сайта и дочерних проектов, гиперссылка на обязательна.
