Trump intensifies effort to discredit Mueller report

Comey: Here's What I Hope We Get From Mueller's Report On The Man Who Fired Me

The almost two-year probe has shadowed Trump's presidency and resulted in felony charges against 34 people including six people who served on Trump's campaign. The decision about whether to make the report public is up to Barr, who during his confirmation hearing said he wanted to provide "as much transparency as I can consistent with the law".

For almost two years, the nation has been bitterly divided by special counsel Robert S. Mueller III's ongoing investigation into the 2016 presidential election and its aftermath.

Barr said he could release his account to Congress as soon as this weekend. Shortly after news of its submission, however, the ACLU demanded the report not be concealed from the voting public. Instead the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director wants the president to suffer a "resounding" loss at the ballot box in 2020.

Mr Trump and other Republicans have repeatedly condemned the probe as a partisan "witch hunt".

House Democrats have made clear they will settle for nothing less than the entire Mueller report, unedited and unredacted.

The conclusion of Mueller's investigation does not remove legal peril for the president.

In an interview with Fox Business' Maria Bartiromo that aired Friday, Trump seemed to be bracing for the possibility that he could be accused of having obstructed justice, arguing, as he has before, that his "fighting" back should not be considered obstruction.

Though Trump is openly welcoming the final report, and even calling for it to be released to the public, Comey writes as if the completion of the investigation and report is under threat.

The president said that Mr Mueller was "best friend" to Mr Comey.

Trump fired Barr's predecessor, Jeff Sessions, in November after complaining for months about Sessions' 2017 decision to recuse himself from overseeing the Russian Federation investigation. Is it because Mueller has concluded that the USA president can't be indicted while in office?

One week before Mueller's appointment, Trump fired FBI Director James Comey, later saying he was thinking of "this Russian Federation thing" at the time.

Mueller's investigators have looked into a large number of contacts between people associated with Trump's campaign and Russia such as a meeting in New York's Trump Tower between members of the president's inner circle including his eldest son and a Kremlin-linked Russian lawyer five months before the election. Everybody knows it. It's all a big hoax.
