FEC Complaint Filed Against Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for 'Extensive Off-the-Books' Campaign

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D., N.Y.) sent a fundraising email Thursday claiming the pro-Israel lobbying group AIPAC is "coming after" her and some of her progressive colleagues, comparing the consensus around the U.S. -Israel relationship to that around the Iraq War a decade ago.

In January 2017 Chakrabarti was also co-founder of the "Justice Democrats" PAC, although he was not an official agent or officer of that committee, either. The New York Rep's campaign also paid Brand New Congress LLC $18,880 for various services.

"Representative Ocasio-Cortez has not only violated the most basic congressional ethics laws on the books, she has done so repeatedly", said FACT's executive director, Kendra Arnold.

Ocasio-Cortez had opposed Amazon.com Inc's plan to create a major NY outpost with almost $3 billion in city and state incentives.

When a Fox News reporter asked Ocasio-Cortez on Tuesday if she violated campaign finance laws, she insisted, "There is no violation".

Chakrabarti may have exceeded the $5,000 contributions limit the Federal Election Campaign Act stipulates. It is unclear whether she had knowledge of the payments to Chakrabarti's corporation.

The complaint states that the Policy Center "has found reason to believe [the] Respondents knowingly and willfully violated 2 U.S.C. 434 (b)(5)(A)", a provision of US campaign finance law that requires the treasurer of any registered political committee to report the name and address of anyone who receives more than $200 in campaign-related spending from that committee, along with the dates and objective of that spending.

In his statement, Mitrani said that the PACs did not disclose information about the ultimate recipients of the money because they were not required to do so by the FEC.

Hume said he thought the first-term congresswoman's appeal would last only a few weeks and said he was surprised by her staying power - even as she has become a go-to talking point among Fox News commentators and hosts.

Brand New Campaign LLC was registered as a private company in the state of DE in May 2016, and in Tennessee in February 2017.

Gregg Re of Fox News reports the FEC complaint asserts that Chakrabarti established two PACs, the Brand New Congress PAC and Justice Democrats PAC, and then systematically transferred more than $885,000 in contributions received by those PACs to the Brand New Campaign LLC and the Brand New Congress LLC - companies that, unlike PACs, are exempt from reporting all of their significant expenditures.

"We were transparent about it from the start", he said Tuesday on Twitter.
