Unemployment rate in India rises to all time high in last 45 years

Big Expose on NSSO jobs data, Unemployment rate at four decade high with 6.1% in 2017-18; BJP to get cornered in Parliament

Earlier this week, P C Mohanan, a career statistician, and J V Meenakshi, Professor at the Delhi School of Economics, resigned from NSC citing the delay in release of the PLFS report as one of the reasons.

The findings of the periodic labour force survey report assumes significance as it is considered the first comprehensive survey on employment conducted by a government agency after the November 8, 2016, demonetisation decision.

Two members - including the acting chairman - of the National Statistical Commission resigned this week, saying the government had not released the job numbers despite the commission's approval.

Dismissing the report, Kumar told mediapersons, " The government did not release the data (on jobs) as it is still being processed.

Without commenting on the veracity of the leaked findings, both officials said that because PLFS is a quarterly survey, its findings can not be compared with results from earlier EUS rounds.

Weather Warning For Ice And Snow Remains In Place
Wintry weather could hit during the evening commute as sleet and snow are set to fall across the city this evening. With another cold night coming up there will be the risk of ice, with subzero temperatures and frost.

The unemployment, according to the report, was higher in urban areas with 7.8 percent as compared to 5.3 percent in rural areas of the country.

An official survey that has been withheld by the government shows India's unemployment rate rose to its highest level in at least 45 years in 2017/18, the Business Standard newspaper reported on Thursday, delivering a blow to Prime Minister Narendra Modi months before a general election. NITI Aayog should not have any role in the collection or publication of NSSO reports. The number of jobs created per year between 2004-05 and 2009-10 fell to just 0.22 million even though the unemployment rate came down to 2% in the 2009-10 EUS.

Youth unemployment was much higher in 2017-18 than in previous years, according to the government report, and "much higher compared to that in the overall population".

The NITI Aayog said the government needed more quarterly data to publish a "comparable" jobs report.

The sanctity of the data was questioned by economists, as real GDP growth rates were drastically altered.

Weak iPhone sales drag down Apple's holiday earnings
Apple may discount the importance of declining iPhone sales today, but they could tell a much different story in future quarters. Sony may supply sensors for this new system, note sources, as Apple has been in talks with the Japanese company.

The report said that joblessness stood at 7.8 percent in urban areas compared with 5.3 percent in the countryside. And critics say the government's claims of economic success have sounded increasingly hollow. "Conventional estimates suggested that there are 12 million entrants per year and the country needs roughly around 7 million jobs... the challenge, however is that we need to take into account people exiting low productivity jobs".

"You can not be growing at 7.2% and saying that there are no jobs being created in the economy", he said.

After the chaotic launch of Goods and Services Tax (GST) in July 2017, hundreds of thousands have lost jobs in small businesses.

Some sociologists say that there are instances of a correlation between high unemployment and an increase in criminal behaviour.

A statistics ministry official said the NSSO had submitted the report, but it was up to the government to decide when it should be released.

Kyrie Irving’s interest in reuniting with LeBron James is ‘for real’
An Irving, Davis and James team will be a formidable one which can surely challenge the dominance of the Golden State Warriors. The Lakers may need to get creative to force the Pelicans' hand, but they have reason to be.
