Nadler prepares subpoena for Whitaker if he backs out of testimony

Whitaker says he won't testify unless House panel abandons subpoena threat

Acting Atty. Gen. Matt Whitaker at the Justice Department in Washington on Jan. 28

Democratic members of the committee erupted in laughter as Whitaker overstepped his role as a witness before the committee.

Whitaker has been supervising special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation after rejecting the advice of career ethics officials to step aside out of an abundance of caution.

Asked whether he has spoken with President Trump about the Southern District of New York's investigation into his former lawyer Michael Cohen, Whitaker wouldn't say.

Friday's hearing nearly didn't happen after Whitaker said Thursday he would not attend if the Democrat-led committee forced him to do so. Boyd also responded to Nadler's request for notification if Whitaker planned to assert executive privilege on certain topics.

Republican Doug Collins assailed the goal for the hearing and unsuccessfully called for it to be adjourned. But he did not answer directly about whether he had discussed that investigation, run by prosecutors in NY, with Trump, insisting only that the president had never instructed him to take particular actions.

Acting AG Whitaker tells House panel he hasn't interfered with Mueller probe
Whitaker never directly answered Nadler about whether anyone had ever asked him to intervene with Mueller. Whitaker was an outspoken critic of the investigation before arriving at the Justice Department in 2017.

"Mr. Attorney General, we are not joking here and your humor is not acceptable", she said.

Jamie Raskin, Democrat from Maryland, reacts as Whitaker tells the chair Nadler his time has expired for questioning.

FBI Director Christopher Wray, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and Barr have all maintained that they do not believe the investigation to be a witch hunt.

The Senate Judiciary Committee voted Thursday to support William P. Barr, Trump's pick for attorney general, and the Republican-led Senate is expected to confirm him in coming weeks.

In response, Whitaker, who previously had agreed to testify, warned that he wouldn't show up unless lawmakers dropped the ultimatum he described as "political theater".

The Raptors even tweeted out "I'm Back" with a photo of Valanciunas, just a couple of hours before he was traded to Memphis. It's not a surprise that Toronto made a move because Philly added Tobias Harris and Milwaukee added Nikola Mirotic .

"I have been on the record about my respect for Bob Mueller", Whitaker said. Collins said Friday the Democrats' move was part of a "character assassination".

On Friday, an hour before Whitaker was due to appear, Nadler, along with Reps.

The interim boss of the Justice Department looked as though he might appear after trading salvos with the House panel's Democratic chairman, Rep. I ask the department to work with the committee to provide them.

"Without the threat of a subpoena, I believe it may be hard to hold Mr. Whitaker to this standard", Nadler said. When Jackson Lee asked Nadler for her time to be restored, Whitaker responded as if the question had been directed towards him.

Democrats said they would inquire about Whitaker's past business dealings, too. The president has also said there was no collusion between his campaign and Russian Federation. But Nadler told reporters after the hearing that he was not happy with Whitaker's answers and said he intends to bring him back for an additional deposition.
