Biggest supermoon of the year is here

In early Native American tribes, the phenomenon was known as a 'super snow moon' as February usually sees the heaviest snowfall, (although there's now no snow forecast here in the UK).

Stargazers in search of their next lunar fix are gonna be in for a treat next week, as a "super snow moon" is forecast to be the biggest and brightest full moon of 2019.

Astrologer Richard Nolle defined the term back in 1979 as a "new or full moon which occurs with the moon at or near (within 90% of) its closest approach to Earth in a given orbit".

February's full moon is the middle of three supermoons in a row. The Moon could appear up to 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than usual, so get your phones out for the spectacular photos. It's being called the "super snow moon".

"The Bone Moon meant that there was so little food that people gnawed on bones and ate bone marrow soup", it explains.

The next supermoon of the year will take place on Tuesday, February 19, but the best time to watch it will be early in the morning (so set those alarms and try to avoid the snooze button).

You won't need to use any special equipment to see the super moon - it'll be huge!

The moon will be officially full at 10:53 a.m. EST, according to NASA's SkyCal. And while you will have to settle for normal-sized full moons for the rest of the year, there are still a few more moon-related astronomical events to look out for this year. Due to an optical illusion, the moon appears larger to us the closer it is to the horizon.

For those who can't catch Tuesday's supermoon, a third supermoon of the year, nicknamed the worm moon, can be seen on March 21.
