According to the indictment, Meng in 2013 made a presentation to a bank executive in which she repeatedly lied about the relationship between Huawei and an Iranian company called Skycom.

"The charges unsealed today clearly allege that Huawei intentionally conspired to steal the intellectual property of an American company in an attempt to undermine the free and fair global marketplace", FBI Director Christopher Wray said in a statement.

Shortly afterwards, in a move widely seen as retaliation for Meng's arrest, Chinese authorities detained two Canadians, including a former diplomat, on security charges. The U.S. said during its press conference it was "deeply grateful to the government of Canada" for following the rule of law.

Wray said firms like Huawei "pose a dual threat to both our economic and national security, and the magnitude of these charges make clear just how seriously the Federal Bureau of Investigation takes this threat".

These US charges come the day after Canada fired its ambassador to China, days after he publicly said the US extradition request for Ms Meng was flawed.
