Trump longtime ally Stone arrested in U.S. Special Counsel probe

They still believed in Russian collusion’ Mueller witnesses reveal what they think the special counsel is focused

Trump adviser Roger Stone arrested on seven charges

Pounding on his door, one agent said: "FBI".

It was the first move in months by the special prosecutor probing Russian collusion in the 2016 United States election and whether Trump and his people tried to obstruct justice.

Promptingspeculationthat they were tipped off by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, aCNNcamera crew was waiting at Stone's home in the early hours of Friday morning to film his arrest. He did not enter a plea. Corsi is referred to as Person 1 in the indictment, and Credico as Person 2. It notes that Stone then continued to pass information along about WikiLeaks and quotes conversations he had with Steve Bannon, who served at the highest level of the campaign and later joined the White House.

But House Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff, a California Democrat, said in a statement that his committee "will be eager to learn just who directed a senior campaign official to contact Stone about additional damaging information held by Wikileaks" just "days before Donald Trump called on Russian Federation to "find the 30,000 emails that are missing" from Hillary Clinton's email server".

The indictment does not accuse Stone of coordinating with Russia's election interference in 2016.

Federal Bureau of Investigation agents took Stone into custody from his home in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. on Friday morning. CNN was already there, cameras trained on the door.

As Marcy Wheeler explains, reading between the lines, it appears that Mueller doesn't know (or can't prove) yet who was involved in the campaign's outreach to Stone. Stone had been predicting his indictment for some time.

Stone is the sixth Trump aide charged in Mueller's investigation into potential coordination between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign and the 34th person overall.

Now, a normal person would see the connections between Stone and the Trump campaign and be horrified that legally actionable evidence has emerged between the Trump campaign and a successful criminal effort to hack into opposition party documents.

Mr Stone said he would formally plead not guilty to the charges in a Washington DC court next week.

"There was no collusion", Smith said.

Trump expressed confidence last month that Stone would ultimately stay loyal to his cause, despite mounting pressure from the ongoing FBI investigation. He has also pushed several conspiracy theories and was an early and vocal supporter of Trump's candidacy.

In 2008, Donald Trump is quoted in a New Yorker profile of Roger Stone as saying the operative is a "stone-cold loser".

Stone claimed he was the victim of a dirty trick, with someone obtaining the photos and placing the ad.

The indictment reveals that a "senior official" on the Trump 2016 campaign asked Stone to inquire with Wikileaks about possible impending releases of damaging information on Hillary Clinton in July 2016.

The two men, however, remained in close contact, the indictment underlying that Stone "maintained regular contact with and publicly supported the Trump Campaign through the 2016 election".

Trump attorney Jay Sekulow said the indictment "does not allege Russian collusion by Roger Stone or anyone else".

The indictment goes on to note that Stone received an email from the high-ranking Trump official asking about future email releases in October 2016. The incitement quotes from those emails, which had previously been made public by news outlets.

And he is accused of "corruptly" persuading one of his associates, NY radio host Randy Credico, not to testify before the House intelligence committee in an effort to hide Stone's false statements.
