Manhunt intensifies for illegal alien accused of killing Calif. police officer

A man suspected of killing a police officer this week in Newman, California, has been arrested, according to Deputy Blake Edwards with the Kern County Sheriff's Office.

Arriaga's brother, Adrian Virgen, and co-worker, Erik Razo Quiroz, were arrested and accused of acting as accomplices, authorities said.

Police officer Ronil "Ron" Singh was shot and killed.

The sheriff told reporters that Perez Arriaga was in the country illegally after crossing the border in Arizona and had two prior arrests for driving while intoxicated. The suspects were identified as Bernabe Madrigal Castaneda, 59; Erasmo Villegas, 36; and Maria Luisa Moreno, 57.

Arriaga, who exchanged fire with Singh, has claimed to be involved with a gang called the Sureũos and was trying to escape to Mexico, Mr. Christianson said.

Cavs sign former Warriors guard Patrick McCaw to multi-year deal
The Warriors, who have until January 7 to make a decision on the offer sheet , appear to be unlikely to match. ET on Sunday to match the offer sheet, but let McCaw go to the Cavaliers on a deal that is non-guaranteed.

The suspect was identified as Gustavo Perez Arriaga, 33, who came to the US illegally and was believed to have been fleeing to Mexico, Stanislaus County Sheriff Adam Christianson told CNN on Friday.

The 33-year-old officer was an immigrant, too, arriving legally from his native Fiji to fulfill his dream of becoming a police officer, authorities said.

The immigration fight has intensified as Trump pushes for funding for a border wall that congressional Democrats oppose, forcing a partial government shutdown.

The president tweeted about Singh's murder on Thursday during the manhunt for his killer, saying it was "time to get tough on Border Security".

"The type of tone and attitude that Sheriff Christianson has taken instills fear and panic in all immigrant communities" that could make people afraid to report crimes, de Leon said.

Fiji-Born Cop Shot And Killed While On Duty In California, US
California authorities launched a manhunt early Wednesday for a man suspected of killing a police officer during a traffic stop. 33-year-old Ronil Singh had made a traffic stop in Newman. "Moments later, he called out "shots fired" over the radio".

Host Martha Raddatz took issue with Jeffries' dodging her question about Singh's death, but he maintained that his lack of familiarity with California statutes prevents him from responding to Christianson's assessment.

During a news conference on Friday, Christianson spoke out strongly against California's sanctuary laws.

Gustavo Perez Arriaga, a 32-year-old Mexican national, was arrested Friday.

His wife, holding their five-month-old baby, stood with family while the community gathered in support. "Law enforcement was prohibited because of sanctuary laws and that led to the encounter with Officer Singh". He didn't say when that happened but that he has been in the USA for several years.

"The law, in fact, does allow that and precisely enables local law enforcement officials to work with ICE when targeting criminals and gang members in particular", said Cohen, an ABC News contributor.

Bears stifle Vikings en route to 24-10 victory
Cousins also threw two interceptions against the Bears, whose 27 interceptions lead the National Football League by a wide margin. If the Vikings win, the most likely scenario would be a return trip to Soldier Field for a playoff game on January 5 or 6.

Christianson said Virgen and Quiroz were also in the United States illegally. State law "fully permits the sharing of information on risky gang members", Brown's spokesman Evan Westrup said in an email on Friday. If armed officers are rendered vulnerable or impotent, what does that say for the rest of us?
