On Sunday, White House national security adviser John Bolton added a new condition to the USA withdrawal from Syria, saying Turkey must agree to protect the United States' Kurdish allies.

Trump's new statement follows a trip by his national security adviser John Bolton to Israel in which he told Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday that withdrawal would not happen before "ISIS [Daesh] is defeated and not able to revive itself".

Bolton told journalists traveling with him earlier in the day that conditions such as guarantees on the safety of America's Kurdish allies must be met before troops are withdrawn, NBC News reported.

"We don't think the Turks ought to undertake military action that's not fully coordinated with and agreed to by the United States at a minimum, so they don't endanger our troops", Bolton said on Sunday.

Bolton is in Israel to reassure the American ally about the planned withdrawal of US troops from Syria, which Israel fears could allow a resurgence of the Islamic State there. Bolton's explanation of the conditions for withdrawal appeared to contradict U.S. President Donald Trump's December 19 Twitter announcement that ISIS had been defeated and that U.S. forces were "coming back now".

Bolton's visit to the Western Wall and the adjacent Western Wall tunnels Sunday was met with anger by Palestinian officials, with Saeb Erekat, the secretary-general of the Palestine Liberation Organization, saying it undermined global law. He also said that Washington is "determined" to keep it that way because the two nations need a "strong bond" and "strong leadership" in increasingly tumultuous times for security.

The US visit comes amid anger in Turkey over comments by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, in which he said the US wanted to prevent Turkey "slaughtering" Kurds in Syria.

He has essentially carried on with President Obama's policy in Syria, launched in 2014, when ISIS was at its peak, and defined by an aggressive bombing campaign and a small number of US forces who work with the Kurds and other USA partners.

Second, the presence of USA troops in north-eastern Syria has prevented the realisation of a long-standing goal of Iranian policy: the establishment of a land bridge running from Iran, through Iraq and Syria, and into Lebanon and the Mediterranean Sea. He said in meetings with Turkish counterparts, he will seek "to find out what their objectives and capabilities are and that remains uncertain".

American National Security Adviser John Bolton has toured the ancient tunnels beneath the Western Wall in Jerusalem's Old City.

Bolton also was to convey the message that the United States is "very supportive" of Israeli strikes against Iranian targets in Syria, according to a senior administration official, who was not authorized to publicly discuss Bolton's plans before the meetings and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Trump himself has more recently spoken of "slowly" sending troops home "over a period of time", and Bolton laid out some of the conditions required before it takes place. Palestinians are concerned that Israelis will use the excavations to further their claim to contested parts of Jerusalem.
