Air Traffic Controllers Warn of 'Unprecedented' Safety Risk As Government Shutdown Continues

Air traffic controllers, forced to take second jobs, warn of "unprecedented" shutdown risk

LaGuardia in NY and Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey were the hardest hit, but delays rippled across the nation's air-travel system.

In a joint statement between the pilots, flight attendants and air traffic controllers, they said, "We have a growing concern for the safety and security of our members, our airlines, and the traveling public...we can not even calculate the level of risk now at play, nor predict the point at which the entire system will break". Philadelphia International Airport had reported departure delays of 1 hour and 14 minutes, but those have dropped back to normal operations by 11 a.m. LaGuardia delays were averaging 1 hour 26 minutes.

A White House official said the air traffic delays played a key role in Trump backing down - at least temporarily - from his insistence on border wall funding to reopen the government. He said the FAA adjusted to meet available staffing by, among other things, rerouting flights and putting more space between planes in the air. The results have been minimal impacts to efficiency while maintaining consistent levels of safety in the national airspace system.

The delays are directly attributable to the partial government shutdown, said Trish Gilbert, executive vice president of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association.
