In a statement November 5, the Indonesian transportation-safety committee called on the U.S. National Transportation and Safety Board and Boeing "to take necessary steps to prevent similar incidents, especially on the Boeing 737 Max, which number 200 aircraft all over the world".

Experts say the Boeing notice could be about the "angle of attack", which is the angle of the wing relative to oncoming air stream, a measure that indicates if a plane is likely to stall.

Boeing has issued operational guidance to airlines as investigators continue to probe what happened to Lion Air Flight 610 which crashed into the Java Sea last month, killing all 189 passengers. About 15 minutes into the flight, which took off from Jakarta, the plane plunged into the sea.

"We know that three other crews faced a similar challenge in this airplane and they landed successfully", he said, referring to the findings of airspeed indicator malfunctions on four flights including the fatal one.

On a flight from Bali to Jakarta on Oct 28 - the plane's penultimate journey before it crashed the next morning - there was a difference between angle of attack readings on the side of the pilot and that of the co-pilot, Mr Soerjanto said.

The brand new Boeing 737 MAX 8 jet plunged into the Java Sea just minutes after takeoff from Jakarta early on October 29, killing all of its passengers on board.

He added that the broken sensor from the Bali-Jakarta flight would be sent to the manufacturer in Chicago for further examination.

Flight JT610 radioed a request to return to Jakarta to land, but never turned back toward the airport, according to Indonesia's National Transportation Safety Committee.

It is understood that the download process started yesterday and it is hoped that clues may emerge quickly as to what systems were not functioning on the near-new plane.

A spokeswoman for Boeing in Singapore declined to comment.

"They need to find that cockpit voice recorder", Waldock said, "because that is going to tell us what the crew did in response to whatever situation they had".

Boeing's newly issued bulletin focuses on the 737 MAX's angle-of-attack sensors, or AOA sensors, which are supposed to provide data about the angle at which wind is passing over the airplane's wings.

Kemp also said he had referred the matter to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Homeland Security. In 2016, he said a DHS computer made an unsuccessful attempt to breach the firewall guarding Georgia's voter data.

The FAA directive applies to about 250 Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft operating worldwide.

The FAA, which regulates the U.S. aviation industry, has not received any reports of airspeed issues with the model in the United States, said a person familiar with its reviews, who asked not to be named as he was not authorised to speak.

"Lion Air said the problem was fixed, is it true the problem was cleared?" asked Bambang Sukandar, whose son was on the flight.

The committee said the pilots were dealing with an erroneous airspeed indication.
