"Halloween" Launches With Massive $77.5M Opening Weekend

Overseas, Halloween will collect an estimated $14.3 million this weekend. The horror genre is one of the most enduring in Hollywood, even as the box office has become more challenging, with titles regularly breaching expectations. Rob Zombie then made a remake and a sequel and finally, we have 2018's Halloween in which - yes - Laurie's resurrected yet again.

With a staggering, $77.5 million debut, Universal and Blumhouse's Halloween topped the weekend with the second largest October opening weekend of all-time.

"I'm going for one BOAST post", Curtis wrote of reprising her role as Laurie Strode in Halloween.

Check your ticket, though, because five people won $1 million in the drawing, including one person in New Jersey. Russ Lopez, spokesman for the California Lottery, said tickets were going "very, very quickly" Saturday.

Reuniting original star Curtis and the world created by horror filmmaker John Carpenter, the film has collected an estimated $US77.5 million ($109 million) in theatres in the USA and Canada.

There's also some deeper cuts like some of the kills being exact replications of frames the original film, the actual creation and production of a "I Wish I Had You All Alone" song (a jingle Jamie Lee and John Carpenter made up on the set of the original), or the subtle inclusion of the children's chorus of chanting that opens the original film. "Audiences are responding to movies big and small right now - You can have your cinematic fast food and fine dining all at once right now".

But with the latest Halloween fresh in theaters (and Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes), Jamie Lee Curtis returns to her roots with this no-holds-barred version of Laurie, along with producer John Carpenter and original Myers player Nick Castle.

Movie theater attendance was up overall the last few days, with this particular weekend (42nd of the year) posting record-breaking ticket sales of about 18.2 million, the highest on record (that is, since 1982).

Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga's new movie, A Star Is Born, held on to the second spot for its third weekend with approximately $19.3 million.
