Everybody on plane survives crash landing in Pacific lagoon

The airline operating a flight that crashed into a lagoon on Friday in the Federated States of Micronesia has said that one passenger is still missing.

"The airline is making all efforts to ensure the safety and immediate needs of our passengers and crew", Air Niugini said.

Colson, who lives on Weno, said the locals who rushed to the scene were fishermen and construction workers. According to reports, the flight carried 36 passengers and in addition to this among them were extra 11 cabin crew who also were rescued.

The Air Niugini Boeing 737-800 plane hit the water while trying to land at Chuuk Island airport in the Micronesia archipelago on Friday. Eight people remain in hospital, one of which is on a ventilator. The airline said the plane landed short of the runway.

He said: "I thought we landed hard". Two Australians were on board the aircraft at the time of the crash.

The aircraft was on it's way from the island of Pohnpei in Micronesia to Port Moresby, the capital of Papua New Guinea, and was scheduled to stop at Micronesia's Weno island on route. The airline and the U.S. Navy both said the plane landed in the lagoon short of the runway.
