9th child dies in adenovirus outbreak at NJ health facility, Health Department confirms

The death on Sunday at Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Haskell, New Jersey, was reported over the weekend by the New Jersey Department of Health. New diagnoses bring the total number of cases to 25.

A staff member who had fallen ill has since recovered from this strain of adenovirus, but the medically fragile children are the ones most vulnerable to the virus.

New Jersey health officials say tests have confirmed a 19th patient has been infected in a viral outbreak at a pediatric rehabilitation centre that has killed seven people.

Those affected range in age from toddlers to young adults, with the vast majority under age 18. The facility has been barred from admitting new patients for the duration of the outbreak. Some strains also cause diarrhea and conjunctivitis.

The health department says the adenovirus outbreak has been particularly severe because it is affecting children with severely compromised immune systems.

Similarly, the states' health department also ensures that it is working very closely with the facility to monitor the illness outbreak, and to ensure that all infection control measures are being followed.

Most adenovirus infections are mild, with symptoms usually lasting about 10 days, according to the CDC.

The state Department of Health Communicable Disease Service has been on site monitoring the outbreak.

The department said the exact cause of death is under investigation.
