Dallas police seek manslaughter warrant against officer who killed neighbor

Dallas Police Chief Renee Hall previously said that police had enough evidence to seek a warrant for manslaughter, but police revealed on Saturday that the Texas Rangers, who took over the investigation, were still investigating and wanted to wait on any warrant.

Hall said a different agency, the Texas Ranger Division of the Texas Department of Public Safety, is investigating the case.

"On September 6, 2018 at about 9:59 p.m., an off duty Dallas Police officer called police dispatch and said she was involved in a shooting at the apartments located at 1210 S. Lamar", police wrote in a previous news release.

The African American Pastors Coalition will host the event at noon Monday, demanding answers in the killing of Botham Jean who was shot to death Thursday night in his own apartment.

Protesters in Texas are demanding immediate jail for a Dallas police officer who entered the wrong apartment, mistaking it for her own, and shot dead the black man who lived there.

The delay has frustrated Jean's grieving family members and raised questions about deferential treatment for police officers.

Jean, who has held government posts in the island nation of St. Lucia, says her son's death "just feels like a nightmare".

Jean is black and Guyger is white.

"We're still dealing in America with black people being killed in some of the most arbitrary ways, driving while black, walking while black and now we have to add living while black", co-counsel Benjamin Crump said. "This family is upset", said attorney Lee Merritt.

Mr Jean is due to be buried on his native St. Lucia on Thursday.

Hall did answer why the officer has not been charged yet with any crime even though she said Friday that the department was seeking a manslaughter charge.

Jean's mother shared stories with the mayor about her late son, "how he loved everybody", "how much he loved Dallas", "didn't really see color" and "always had a smile on his face", according to Rawlings.
