Moon is scheduled to stay in Pyongyang for three days till Thursday.

Government data showed last week South Korea's unemployment rate hit the highest level in August since the global financial crisis, with mandatory minimum wage hikes leading to a sharp slowdown in hiring. They met North Korean Deputy Prime Minister Ri Ryong Nam, who is in charge of economic affairs, although Seoul officials said they did not expect any specific joint economic projects to be agreed given extensive global sanctions.

Kim has since suggested a second summit with Trump, with the White House saying they are working on setting a date.

Ahead of the summit, North Korea's Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) in a statement said that the summit is an important opportunity in "further accelerating the development" in relations between the rivals, reported AP.

South Korea's president hopes to be a mediator between the two, as well as boosting the inter-Korean relationship.
