A highway overpass has collapsed in the crowded Indian city of Kolkata, with a concrete segment slamming to the ground and killing at least one person, according to officials. It was not immediately clear what had caused the structure to partially collapse.
A total of 25 injured people have been rushed to hospital. President Ram Nath Kovind said he was "sorry to learn" about the partial bridge collapse.
Kolkata Police Commissioner said that one person has been killed, while 16 others were injured.

"We dug two manholes into the debris and rescuers descended into them looking for survivors, but did not find anyone there". Traffic movement to and from Behala suburbs and South 24 Parganas district were hit.

Petrol prices were increased to Rs 86.72, Rs 82.22 and Rs 82.41 per litre in Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai respectively on Tuesday. Diesel per litre is priced at Rs 71.34 in Delhi, Rs 74.19 in Kolkata, Rs 75.74 in Mumbai and Rs 75.39 in Chennai.
The bridge stood over rail tracks in an old part of the city. The DCP traffic Kolkata has said that several routes leading to the collapse site has been temporarily shut and traffic has been diverted.
An official of the Kolkata Traffic Police said, "We expect traffic jam because the Majherhat bridge has collapsed".
Opposition parties blamed the Trinamool Congress government and said its "callousness towards the fix of old bridges" was the main reason for the collapse.
It was the second major road collapse in Kolkata in recent years. "He had gone to visit relatives when the incident happened".
