The Mirror reports that Jose Mourinho told Manchester United not to make a move for Cristiano Ronaldo when the Portuguese superstar chose to leave Real Madrid.

Before Cristiano Ronaldo completed a world record move to Italian champions Juventus, there were reports that the Portugal global wanted to make a return to Old Trafford. The report claims that United could not sign Toby Alderweireld, Harry Maguire or Diego Godin.

The Red Devils were linked with a move for their former talisman, with United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward keen to reunite with the 33-year-old.

The Mirror add that Mourinho is still furious with Woodward for not backing him this summer.

Ronaldo's hunt for his first competitive goal for Juventus continues when the Italian giants host Sassuolo in Serie A on September 16.

Ronaldo completed a stunning £100 million transfer to Juventus, with his eight-year old son joining the clubs youth team as well.

"I said before the start of the season that matching what we did last season was going to be hard", Mourinho said.

"I knew this was going to be hard because I also knew that last season was very, very hard".

The poor results and ongoing spat with Woodward have surprisingly even led to some speculation that Mourinho is fighting for his future in United's upcoming games.

Mourinho is said to have felt that handing Real Madrid £90m in transfer fees for a player who would also demand wages in excess of £500,000-a-week made little sense when his top priority for the summer had been defensive reinforcements. "We are willing to play in a way that carries risk, but if you make mistakes in defence it breaks the dynamic".
