John McCain dies at 81 after battle with brain cancer

Although he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer, McCain returned to the Senate to vote on healthcare legislation on July 25, 2017, delivering a critical vote that prevented the repeal of Obamacare. His dogged patriotism and passion for country made him an inspiration, and a model, for all of us.

Veteran US senator and war hero John McCain - a towering figure in American politics for decades - has died at age 81 after losing his battle with brain cancer.

According to McCain's website, he was elected to the House of Representatives in 1982 before being elected to the United States Senate in 1986. During five years in captivity, including more than two in solitary confinement, he suffered beatings and torture nearly daily. By the mid-1960s, the Vietnam War was raging and McCain's squadron was drawn into battle.

In the 1990s, McCain shouldered another wrenching issue, the long effort to account for American soldiers still missing from the war and to normalize relations with Vietnam.

His office says McCain died Saturday.

After surviving that election, though, McCain took on conservatives in his party over the federal debt and Democrats over foreign policy. Consequently, he was a key vote for both sides of the aisle: in the previous year alone, he helped Senate Republicans ensure their tax reform legislation passed the chamber and sank Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's health care proposal - which would have repealed much of Obamacare - by voting against it.

He lost the 2008 presidential election to Barack Obama, and was pilloried for selecting controversial Alaska politician Sarah Palin as his vice presidential running-mate. Romney released a almost 500-word essay on McCain and their friendship on his campaign website. In the Senate, he was a mentor to so many senators: he taught us how to work with leaders on the world stage, and he taught us how to work with each other regardless of party back at home.

Environmental groups warned the focus on improving efficiency of coal-fired generators could raise overall carbon emissions. President Donald Trump is expected to promote the new plan at an appearance in West Virginia on Tuesday.

A dark period for McCain came as one of the "Keating Five " group of senators accused of improperly intervening with federal regulators to help political contributor and bank executive Charles Keating, whose Lincoln Savings and Loan failed in 1989 at a cost to taxpayers of US$3.4 billion (S$4.64 billion). He taught us that as a POW in Vietnam when he made the decision to not allow others to be released before him so he didn't get special treatment. In politics, he fell short of his greatest ambition. At the moment of greatest excitement at the convention, the acceptance speech, he stilled the screaming throngs by directly addressing Democratic nominee Barack Obama: "You have my respect and my admiration".

A statement from the Senator's office confirmed the Senator was surrounded by his wife Cindy and his family when he passed. I know that they-along with the rest of his family-are all grieving tonight, as is our entire country. We in the media loved to be assigned to him because he was frank and amusing, but he could also get really mad.

Senator John McCain was a humble hero and an American patriot.

"Angela and I join all Arizonans in praying for Cindy and the entire McCain family during this hard time and offering our full support".

"Our family is immensely grateful for the support and kindness of all his caregivers over the previous year, and for the continuing outpouring of concern and affection from John's many friends and associates, and the many thousands of people who are keeping him in their prayers. He lived by his creed every day".
