STDs hit all-time highs in U.S. for fourth straight year, CDC reports

The federal health agency said in a report released Tuesday that the numbers reflect a “steep sustained increase” in STDs since 2013

Rates of three STDs in US reach record high, CDC says

The CDC announced Tuesday that 2.29 million cases of chlamydia, syphilis, and gonorrhea had been diagnosed in the USA throughout 2017-an increase of more than 200,000 cases over 2016.

Almost 2.3 million STDs were diagnosed previous year, which is a record number.

It is the highest figure ever recorded - outstripping the record set in 2016 by more than 200,000.

"We're sliding backward", Jonathan Mermin, director of CDC's National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD and TB Prevention, said.

"We have seen steep and sustained increases over the last five years", Dr. Gail Bolan, the CDC's director of the Division of STD Prevention, told NBC News.

Primary and secondary syphilis, of which there were 30,644 diagnoses in 2017, represented a 76 percent increase.

STD rates have also surged in Indiana.

Chlamydia was the most common condition reported to the CDC, with more than 1.7 million cases diagnosed in 2017.

But Fraser pointed out that the solution to the rising STD problem is not going to be "treating our way out of it", and that a solid public health infrastructure is also needed.

More than 4 percent of gonorrhea samples were resistant to azithromycin in 2017, up from 1 percent in 2013.

Graham Shares What He Learned From John McCain
Mr Davis also shared Mr McCain's farewell statement in which he described himself as "the luckiest person on earth". Republican Sen Bill Cassidy, of Louisiana, said he'd "rather find another way" than rename the Russell building.

"If we're not teaching people how to keep themselves safe from sexually transmitted infections early, then we start to see these surges and increases in those rates", Rauch said.

These STDs are curable with antibiotics, yet most cases go undiagnosed and untreated, according to the CDC. Specifically, officials cited years of cutbacks in funding for STD prevention, with state and local health departments who rely on federal funding to support their STD programs, working with budgets that are half of what they were 15 years ago.

"Doctors are not screening and testing for STDs, and patients don't know they need to ask for that screening and treatment", he said at the briefing.

The trend is exacerbated by the fact that gonorrhea could soon become resistant to antibiotic treatment, the CDC said in a statement Tuesday.
