Ira Acree, co-chairman of the Leaders Network-Chicago and a pastor on the city's West Side, said this weekend's horrific violence underscores that two Chicago's exist-one that is thriving and largely inoculated from the shootings and another that's been ravaged by disinvestment and indifference from the city's politicians.

"I promise this city that we won't be defeated, we won't be overrun by that small group, that small element that is committing these reckless acts", said Chief Waller.

He said Emanuel should begin working with Trump to fix the crime problem, adding that "as long as we are divided and fighting against the president, [improvement] is not going to happen".

"I'm exhausted of it, everyone in this city is exhausted of it", police superintendent Eddie Johnson said.

Two people were killed and 28 were wounded between midnight and 3 a.m., including at least 13 teenagers.

Police also noted that numerous shootings were in four police districts, including the West Side's Harrison, Ogden and Austin police districts, that have struggled with violent crime this year.

Earlier this weekend, Chief of Patrol Fred Waller blamed gang members who often target one specific person in a group, but end up wounding several innocent bystanders. He says they "shoot into a crowd, no matter who they hit". He would not blame the weekend's violence on the weather.

For many right-wingers, Chicago has become a symbol of Democratic hypocrisy on gun reform, since the city is run by a Democratic mayor, Rahm Emanuel, and is home to a famous liberal party machine. Before the weekend's surge, they credited it with declines in homicides and shootings from past year.
