2018 primary election: Check back for results from statewide and local races

Gov. Jeff Colyer spoke with reporters Tuesday as his political future hung on the balance of a too-close-to-call primary with Secretary of State Kris Kobach

GOP hold on SC seat in Congress at risk in ‘blue tsunami,’ election watchers say

A tight race in today's special congressional election in OH could signal trouble for Republicans in the midterm elections.

Pollsters rate the OH race between Republican State Senator Troy Balderson and Democratic lawyer Danny O'Connor, 31, as a toss-up.

Even though Republicans were the ones declaring victory Democrats seemed just as gleeful, if not more, especially since the two candidates will face off again in November.

Trump visited Ohio's 12th District on Saturday and appeared on stage with Balderson at a rally created to jolt conservatives into turning out to vote in an election that will gauge where the Republican Party stands less than three months before the midterms.

While Republicans were glad to have the apparent victory, the narrowness and lack of finality of the apparent victory in a district President Trump won by 11 points in 2016 is cause for concern.

Liverpool FC could launch a last-gasp bid to sign Lyon playmaker Nabil Fekir before deadline day, according to a report in France. Nabil Fekir will not feature for Lyon against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge this evening as talk of a move to London rumbles on.

Republican outside groups spent more than $5 million combined to salvage Balderson's prospects in the race after he was vastly out-raised by O'Connor.

Debbie Stabenow will take on military veteran and business executive John James, who won the Republican nomination.

"We always knew this was going to be a close race, and while we don't know the results quite yet, I know that this campaign left it all on the field", O'Connor said in a statement Tuesday night.

Meanwhile, more than 700 miles to the west, Kansas Republicans were fighting among themselves in the escalating battle for governor, where Secretary of State Kris Kobach was trying to unseat Gov. Jeff Colyer.

President Donald Trump is greeted by 12th Congressional District Republican candidate Troy Balderson as he arrives on Air Force One at John Glenn Columbus International Airport in Columbus, Ohio, Saturday, Aug. 4, 2018.

Republicans focussed on mobilising their voters through negative advertisements portraying the Democratic candidate as a puppet of coastal elites while the Democrats' messaging centred on protecting access to healthcare and social security.

The phone will also attempt to predict what apps you like to run by displaying short-cuts to them during certain pairs of the day. There's a redesigned Quick Settings included, too, along with a new way to take screenshots and simplified volume controls .

And while Trump claimed credit for the tight victory in a Tuesday night tweet, it's likely Kasich who deserves the game ball for helping Balderson hang on in enough suburban territory to pull out the win.

The close race in the OH special election became a referendum on Trump's leadership and a last chance to gauge Democratic strength ahead of November's midterm elections. All 435 House seats, 35 of 100 Senate seats and 36 of 50 governors' offices are up for grabs in November.

Trump didn't seem anxious about Kobach's prospects. Republicans have controlled the district for 35 years.

O'Connor has dominated Balderson on the local airwaves.

According to CNN's Eric Bradner, there are roughly 70 House seats held by the GOP which are less conservative than Ohio's 12th District - considerably more than they would need. Bernie Sanders, Vermont independent, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the newest socialist star, made several endorsements in Tuesday's primaries.

Senate contests in Missouri and MI will come into focus as two vulnerable Senate Democrats, Missouri's Claire McCaskill and Michigan's Debbie Stabenow, are expected to easily claim their party's nominations.
