Quake Hits Indonesia's Lombok Island, USGS Says

At least 14 people were killed and dozens more injured on Sunday when a shallow 6.4 magnitude natural disaster shook Indonesia's Lombok island, officials said.

People were sent running from homes and hotels in the early morning as the natural disaster hit.

By 1 p.m. the agency had recorded 104 aftershocks, with the largest measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale.

An estimated 689 people remain trapped on the mountain, according to Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman for the national disaster mitigation agency.

A rescue operation is now underway for the tourists trapped by landslides on Mount Rinjani, a Lombok volcano popular for hiking enthusiasts.

The quake damaged dozens of single-storey houses and taller buildings and was felt in a wider area, including in Bali, where no damage or casualties were reported.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake struck at a depth of 7 kilometers (4.4 miles).

An emergency tent was set up on a street in Sembalun to treat the injured because the local hospital was damaged, and those in a critical condition were taken to other hospitals.

"People in East Lombok and Mataram felt the strong quake for 10 seconds, residents were panicking and running outside of their homes", Nugroho said earlier, adding people had run for open spaces such as football fields.

As of now, 500 structures have been destroyed and 80, acres have been charred from the Carr Fire, which is only 5% contained. A total of eight people have died across the state as a result of wildfires - four of them firefighters.

These include a Malaysian woman and a climber from South Sulawesi province who died in Mount Rinjani National Park. There were also two secondary quakes and more than 100 aftershocks.

It is frequently hit by quakes, a lot of them harmless.

A magnitude 6.5 quake struck off the north-east Coast of Sumatra Island in 2016, killing dozens of people and displacing more than 40,000. Bali and Lombok airports are still operating, the spokesperson said.

The Ring of Fire is an area in the Pacific Ocean where the Earth's tectonic plates collide, making it a hotspot for earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
