USDA to provide $12bn to US farmers in response to tariffs

After a meeting at the White House with the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, Trump said the EU would buy larger quantities of U.S. soybeans and work with Washington to cut other trade barriers to zero.

President Donald Trump proved himself once again as a "man of action" in a "town of talk" by gaining major trade concessions on Wednesday with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, according to Kellyanne Conway.

"Surprisingly and in contrast to my usual behavior, the initiative did not come from me", he said, adding that he was unaware that another photographer was present in the room.

Trump knows that most of our trading partners don't really want free trade; they want managed trade, where they can get access to USA markets while protecting certain industries from US competition.

"I think if we hadn't done the steel and aluminum tariffs, and if we hadn't had the threat of automotive tariffs, we never would have gotten to the point where we are now", he said.

Trump is known for disliking lengthy memos and documents which contain too much detail.

"Suddenly, Trump came out into our group and asked, 'So, where are we now?"

Last month, the United States president slapped tariffs on steel and aluminium imports to prompt tit-for-tat measures by Brussels, including tariffs on tobacco, Harley Davidson motorcycles, cranberries and peanut butter.

The White House and the Europeans now plan to launch talks aimed at an ambitious deal to abolish tariffs on industrial goods.

"We will work toward zero tariffs ... zero on tariff barriers, and zero subsidies on non-auto industry goods", the president said.

"Today's announcement demonstrates that bilateral negotiations are a more effective approach to resolving trade barriers, not increasing tariffs", the alliance said in a statement.

Still, the deal announced on Wednesday with the European Union is an encouraging sign that America's trade partners may be able to placate the Trump administration with offers to buy more U.S. goods, averting a trade war that the International Monetary Fund has warned may undermine the strongest global upswing in years.

The joint statement said Brussels and Washington would "work to reduce barriers and increase trade" in a range of products including soybeans, and that the European Union "wants to import more liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States".

"It's closely related", she said. Similar negotiations were already underway for several years as part of the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership during the Obama administration; however, they were halted indefinitely in late 2016.
