Massive salmonella outbreak linked to backyard chicken flocks

CDC: Pre-cut melon linked to salmonella reports in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri and Ohio

Health officials say a salmonella outbreak linked to pre-cut melon has sickened 60 people in five Midwestern states.

The people who took ill came from IL (6), IN (11), MI (32), Missouri (10), and OH (1), the agency said.

Of the 60 people reported sick, 31 have been hospitalized due to illness associated with the infection.

The CDC said the recalled products were sold in clear, plastic containers at Costco, Jay C, Kroger, Payless, Owen's, Sprouts, Trader Joe's, Walgreens, Walmart and Whole Foods/Amazon.

Do not eat recalled products. Officials say it is recommended that people not eat pre-cut melon from Walmart stores anywhere in IL.

Six people in IL have been sickened by the outbreak.

Officials said pre-cut melons distributed by Caito Foods, which is based in Indianapolis, were the likely source of the outbreak.

The US Food and Drug Administration, which is investigating the outbreak alongside the CDC, is working to identify a supplier of pre-cut melon to stores where ill people shopped. The Indiana health department said symptoms include diarrhea and stomach cramps and typically appear between 12 and 72 hours after infection.

Last year, the CDC reported the largest number of salmonella illnesses linked to backyard flocks after the lifestyle trend emerged across the country.

The pre-cut melons have been removed from Walmart store shelves in IL. Most people recover without treatment, but severe cases can lead to hospitalization. Whole melon is still OK to eat, the CDC said.
