As per a Deutsche Welle report, Merkel, in her first interview after the summit, called Trump's statement as "a little depressing" and termed the G7 communique as an "arduously negotiated" one.

Merkel has proposed creating a forum to defuse escalating trade tensions with Trump's White House, despite the G7 leaders' failed attempt to Trump to back down from his decision to slap harsh tariffs on his own North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies on grounds that they pose a national security threat to the United States.

Trump announced in tweets following his early departure from the summit that he would refuse to sign the communiqué as a result of press conference comments by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Merkel said that Trump would probably retaliate by implementing new tariffs on German vehicles. The official said disagreements remain, particularly with the USA on a number of issues, but the goal remains to reach agreement on all the big issues.
