And these things are systemic; there are ways that we can change them.

President Donald Trump has framed the decision around the national anthem and his repeated arguments that NFL players should be required to stand on the field when the song is played before games.

On the day when the Philadelphia Eagles were supposed to be there to commemorate winning the Super Bowl - a visit that was canceled by President Donald Trump and had the White House accusing players who weren't planning on attending of abandoning their fans - Curry and James were among those speaking out at the NBA Finals in support of the Eagles.

But today (June 6), Jenkins put the power of creative protest in display One sign said "YOU AREN'T LISTENING", another said "Chris Long gave his entire year's salary to educational initiatives". But it may also be that a large number of players simply weren't going to show up. None of the Eagles players knelt during the anthem at any point last season.

The overwhelming issue surrounding the Eagles' planned visit was that most of the team was not going to attend, and that was a major factor in Trump deciding to pull the invitation. Coach Doug Pederson had met with the team recently to gauge what the feeling around the locker room might be.

The Warriors, last year's National Basketball Association champs, were not invited to the White House, a moot point since they said they would not go if invited.

With criticism mounting throughout the morning Tuesday, the White House issued a statement defending its decision because Eagles players had "abandoned" their fans.

"Given all the things that we have going on in the world right now that require the president's attention, his focus on the football story is surprising", said Janice Todd, the president of the North American Society for Sport History.

"I hope to be in that situation and win two more games where we win a championship, and obviously know what comes with that", he said. Trust me, that's not always the case in pro sports.
