Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland responded to the White House assault by saying ad hominem attacks were not helpful, that Canada would retaliate to U.S. tariffs in a measured and reciprocal way and that Canada would always be willing to talk.

The president went into the meeting under intense pressure from foreign leaders after he slapped high tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, citing US national security needs.

Shortly after Mr. Trudeau said that he was "happy to announce that we have released a joint communique by all seven countries" indicating that the United States was also included, Mr. Trump announced that Washington would reverse its decision and not sign the statement.

The president recently announced a 25 percent tariff on steel and a 10 percent tariff on imported aluminum from nations including the Canada, Mexico and the European Union.

President Emmanuel Macron reacted with a statement slamming Mr Trump's behaviour at the summit. The European Union targets USA -built cars with a 10-percent tariff, while the United States distinguishes between vans or pickup trucks and other cars. It showed a seemingly glowering German Chancellor Angela Merkel and several other leaders appearing to confront a seated Trump.
