Kathmandu: Nepal's Kami Rita Sherpa on Wednesday set a new world record by scaling Mount Everest for the 22nd time.

Drama on the the highest slopes of Everest this morning where, during a summit bid on the Tibetan side of the mountain, a group of mountaineers belonging to the Alpenglow expedition led by America's Adrian Ballinger encountered serious issues with their supplementary oxygen regulators.

Kami made his first ascent of Everest in 1994 when he was 24.

"He has set the world record", said Mingma Sherpa, chairman of the Seven Summit Treks company that employs Kami.

Before leaving the Everest base camp, Kami had announced that he intends to climb Everest 25 times.

Sherpa, a resident of Thame village in Solukhumbu district of Nepal where Qomolangma is located, has already climbed the world's tallest peak 21 times successfully. He plans to summit the mountain at least three more times - meaning he'll set three more records. In her early days, she would help climbers by cooking form them and worked as a porter before she trained as a climber.

For the 44 year-old Lhakpa is the ninth time on the highest point of the earth, a female record that beats the record set by herself a year ago.

Earlier in the day, City Manager Danny Langloss said students were gathered at the gym for graduation practice. Dixon High has been evacuated, and all Dixon schools are on lockdown while the investigation proceeds.

The twin records come on the heels of Australian Steve Plain becoming the fastest person to conquer the highest mountains on all seven continents.

Hundreds of climbers are on Everest attempting to reach the summit during the narrow window of good weather in May.

The team reached the summit on Sunday afternoon while fixing ropes for foreign climbers, who will begin this week to ascend the mountain.

The rapid growth in the climbing industry has accompanied complaints of overcrowding on the mountain and fears that inexperienced mountaineers could run into trouble.
