Police said the latest victim was in critical condition with burns over 95% of her body after being raped by a local youth Friday near a police station in Pakur.

'The accused told us that he wanted to marry the victim but she wasn't ready, ' police officer Shailendra Barnwal said.

After a string of rape cases which have jolted India over the past few weeks, another rape case where a 16-year-old in the north-western state of Jharkhand was gang-raped and set on fire.

After the parents reported the case to the police, 15 of the 20 accused men were arrested, said Jitendra Kumar Singh, deputy commissioner of the state's Chatra District.

The country had already been agonising over the brutal gang-rape and killing of an eight-year-old girl in Jammu and Kashmir state, which is to be raised in the Supreme Court on Tuesday.

It is the second such incident to be reported in Jharkhand in recent days as another teenage girl who police say was raped and burned alive died on Sunday.

Last month, a seven-year-old girl was also raped and murdered during a wedding ceremony in the village of Etah in Uttar Pradesh.

A 19-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the attack.

The latest victim was attacked on Friday, the same day that the 16-year-old was abducted from her home and murdered in retaliation for speaking out about her rape.
