As we head into Memorial Day weekend, the rows of headstones that mark the final resting place of over 400,000 USA service members should stand as reminders-as should all grave markers at each of our country's 135 national cemeteries-for us to take a moment to set aside our political caterwauling and focus on the objective of the solemn holiday: to honor the men and women who died in battle while serving in the USA military.

An arrangement of 200 flags will be displayed, each in honor or memory of a friend or family member who served in the armed forces. Come be a part of the real meaning of Memorial Day remembering and honoring those who died. They will be held on Monday, May 28, unless otherwise specified. Free shuttle bus service is offered within the village.

Following the service uptown that will include the Hillsboro High School Marching Band and other patriotic music, the Highland County Veterans Honor Guard will visit St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery and the Hillsboro Cemetery to lay a wreath a fire a salute, but VFW Commander Rick Wilkin said there will no procession to those locations. On Friday May 25 at 9:00 a.m. the Avenue of flags will be placed around the Long Grove Cemetery. The parade is held rain and shine and is free to the public.

Ada - 10 a.m. The parade will travel down Main Street to Summer Street and to the Linwood Cemetery for a ceremony. Speakers include Thompson, town Supervisor Joel Maerten and New York State Assembly Member Ray Walter. The requirement for this honor is that you must be an Oelwein High School graduate and still be eligible to wear the military uniform of our country. The 1.5 mile parade route begins at E. 64th Ave. and Newport St. and ends at 6060 E. Parkway Dr.

Veterans eat free. The Memorial Day service will begin at 2 p.m.at the church. It will step off at 10 a.m. and proceed north on Broadway, right onto Pleasant Street and right onto Charles Street for a ceremony.

Featured speaker will be Captain Lori Fassett of the Michigan National Guard.

Following the service, the annual Chicken Noodle Dinner will be served at the Legion Hall.

Memorial rituals will be conducted by the Legion Post and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7198.

An additional ceremony will be held in Woodlawn Cemetery immediately following.

The close of the program follows with the placing of wreaths, a ceremonial rifle salute and the sounding of "Taps".

A meal will be served following the two ceremonies at Effingham American Legion Post 120 Club Room. If inclement weather, program held at 1867 West Dennis Graded School, School Street.

The parade will start at 10:15 a.m., heading to Riverview Cemetery, then down Miller, Second and Vliet streets to Holy Rosary Church Cemetery, and finally to the Courthouse. Memorial Day service honoring servicemen and -women. The American Legion Post 155 will host the event along with Cody Myers leading the service.

The VFW Memorial Day Observance is taking place at the same time Monday at the Evergreen Cemetery downtown.

Following the park service, an open house is held at the VFW Post Home on Railroad Avenue. The parade will wind down Mammoth to the Town Common for traditional services. 11 a.m. memorial service with speaker Sergeant Paul Joseph, at Veterans Memorial Park at Fifth and Main. Program at the cemetery followed by a gathering at Gallagher Hansen VFW Post 295. (Drivers willing to help transport people during the parade should be lined up in that parking lot at 9:30 a.m.).

Youngstown: 61st Annual Smoky Hollow Memorial, 11:15 a.m., at Walnut Street and Rayen Avenue.

Cottage Grove: 1 p.m. Monday at the Veterans Memorial outside City Hall, 12800 Ravine Parkway S. Hosted by the city's Beyond the Yellow Ribbon organization.
