Those remarks came days after North Korea threatened to pull out of the summit altogether if the US continued to demand the "unilateral" surrender of its nuclear weapons.

Mr Trump accepted North Korea's invitation for direct talks after more than a year of heated rhetoric and with global concern that hostilities might escalate into military confrontation.

Asked on Wednesday whether the summit would go ahead, Trump told reporters: "It could very well happen". "The American people are counting on us to get this right".

Mr Pompeo said the U.S. was prepared to walk away from the talks and a "bad deal" was not an option. "If the right deal is not on the table, we will respectfully walk away".

The cancellation of a meeting between American and North Korean officials in Singapore a few weeks ago may have something to do with President Donald Trump's change of posture on the summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Pompeo said he made clear to Kim the U.S. view of what steps Pyongyang needs to take, including verification work, in order to demonstrate "real denuclearization".

Even if the summit seems unlikely at the moment, it will probably be held on June 12th in Singapore as both sides have too much to lose if the meeting is canceled.

He said he intends to meet with allies in June to discuss next steps to stop what he described as all of Tehran's nuclear and non-nuclear threats. "A number of discussions have taken place below the foreign minister level", Pompeo said.

"We're optimistic that we can achieve an outcome that would be great for the world", Pompeo said.

Meeks accused Pompeo of neglecting the issue now that he is secretary of state, and of treating Clinton, who lost to Trump in the 2016 presidential election, "with venom" as he accused her of not caring about diplomats' safety.

Pompeo says previous USA administrations had been "fooled before and we can't permit that to happen again".

For starters, there'd be the craved photo of him shaking hands with a sitting United States president. But whereas Trump dreads political embarrassment, Kim has more existential fears.

"It would certainly be better if it were all-in-one", Trump said. "But if we make a deal, I think Kim Jong-un is going to be very, very happy".

But the U.S. can not protect Kim from threats inside North Korea.

The form also shows the President's golf courses missed par past year earning $67 million less than before he took office. Giuliani said he knew news of the payment would come out, even if he didn't know "exactly when or what would come out".

However, Pyongyang's professed commitment to "denuclearisation" is likely to differ from Washington's demand for "comprehensive, verifiable and irreversible" nuclear disarmament.
