Peterson was branded a "coward" by President Donald Trump and Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said that he should have gone into the school building to "kill the killer".

Surveillance video of the Parkland shooting showed the officer approaching the high school building in which suspect shooter Nikolas Cruz was stalking the halls, but he then backed away and stayed outside with his handgun drawn.

What was the response to Peterson receiving his pension?

According to the Sun-Sentinel, Peterson received his first pension payment in April and can receive the monthly payments for the rest of his life.

The 55-year-old Peterson, a deputy for 32 years, was paid $101,879.03 last year, according to sheriff's office records.

Peterson gained national infamy in February after it was revealed he hid outside a school building while one of the largest school shootings in USA history was ongoing.

The father of one of the student victims of the Valentine's Day massacre, Andrew Pollack, meanwhile has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against eight people and entities, including Peterson. Before the pension payments began, the Department of Management Services asked Broward State Attorney Michael Satz about Peterson, but Satz's office said it had no information to provide and referred questions to FDLE.

Outraged by news of Peterson's hefty pension, Pollack took to twitter to vent. He hid while my daughter and 16 others were slaughtered!

Despite Peterson's cowardly actions, his former employer has continued to support him, stating, "the allegations that Mr. Peterson was a coward and that his performance, under the circumstances, failed to meet the standards of police officers are patently untrue". That money should go to actually securing our schools!
