UK's Baby Alfie Evans Dies After Court Rules to Withdraw Life Support

Alfie Evans, a sick British toddler whose parents won support from the Pope during a protracted legal battle to take him to the Vatican children's hospital for treatment, has died.

As LifeNews reported, after removing his life support without permission, officials at Alder Hey Children's Hospital waited 28 hours before finally feeding the 23-month old boy, who was fighting a rare neurological condition.

This morning the family updated the public with the news and wrote: 'Our baby boy grew his wings tonight at 2:30 am.

The legal campaign, launched by Mr. Evans and Alfie's mother Kate James, attracted widespread media attention and saw them clash with doctors over the child's treatment.

Alfie was taken off life support on Monday, and an appeals court upheld a previous decision barring the family from taking the child overseas days later despite his having been granted Italian citizenship to ease the process.

"Our lives have been turned upside down by the intense focus on Alfie and his situation", Evans said Thursday outside the Liverpool hospital. "Thank you everyone for all your support", she wrote.

Upon Alfie's death early Saturday morning, thousands poured out their condolences on Twitter.

The terminally ill British toddler's case drew attention from all over the world including Pope Francis.

In a bid to facilitate moving Alfie to Italy to receive treatment, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said: "Foreign minister Angelino Alfano and interior minister Marco Minniti have granted citizenship to little Alfie".

Mourners could be heard chanting Alfie's name, as well as crying and consoling each other, before the balloons were released into the sky around 3pm.
