Russia starts Telegram blocking process

The app's ban came into effect on April 16 and was imposed as a result of Telegram's failure to give the Russia Federal Security Service (FSB) the encryption keys to decipher messages, as required by Russian law.

Russia's state telecommunications regulator Roskomnadzor said Monday that it had sent a notice to telecommunications operators in the country instructing them to block the service.

The watchdog, Roskomnadzor, said in a statement on its website that it had sent telecoms operators a notification about blocking access to Telegram inside Russian Federation.

The third point of the court decision requires Roskomnadzor to not create the conditions for the technical access to the blocked messenger.

Abe, Wang agree on need to denuclearize North Korea
Abe wants to amend the clause denying Japan a full-fledged military and cast off some of the postwar shackles. This is based on the " unmentioned swipe " at the Trump administration in relation to a possible trade war.

Telegram's founder and CEO, Pavel Durov, said the ban would damage the quality of lives of 15 million Russians and do nothing to improve Russia's security.

It has been reported that Telegram has been banned in Russian Federation, after they refused to hand over encryption keys. "We also have been relying on third-party cloud services to remain partly available for the rest of our users", he wrote.

Some Russian Telegram users, including members of government agencies, are skirting the ban by using VPNs.

As a result of refusing to comply, Roskomnadzor is blocking the app in Russian Federation. Telegram is a big competitor to WhatsApp in Russia and it is to be noted that the social networking sites and apps from the United States of America could not overcome the Russian apps and sites inside Russia.

The Russian government had demanded access to investigate terrorist threats.

"We always see an increase of users from the countries where freedom of speech is restricted or surveillance is increased", chief marketing officer Marty Kamden said.

Two of Russia's biggest service providers have already blocked Telegram. President Emmanuel Macron famously used Telegram to organise his campaign for the 2017 presidential election previous year and has reportedly been using it ever since. Telegram said last month its total audience globally surpassed 200 million users, driven by attention for the world's largest initial coin offering.
