Karapetyan, in his capacity of acting prime minister, subsequently called on the president to organise a meeting with parliamentary and extra-parliamentary political forces to discuss the current domestic political situation and possible ways of resolving it.

Clutching a purple rose, the bearded Pashinyan, 42, led a huge crowd of supporters to the hilltop Tsitsernakaberd memorial, wearing his trademark khaki-coloured T-shirt, where he held official commemorations.

Residents of all countries around the world should take note of Armenia's demonstration of the power of people.

Those talks were cancelled after the two sides failed to agree an agenda however and Pashinyan declared late on Tuesday he was ready to become the people's prime minister.

The discussion that Sargsyan might be nominated by his party for the position of prime minister sparked the Reject Serzh campaign, which protest leader Nikol Pashinyan dubbed Armenia's own "velvet revolution". "A faction that got 7-8 percent of the vote [in the April 2017 parliamentary elections] can not speak on behalf of the people", he said, referring to the opposition Yelk bloc, of which Pashinyan is a leader.

Since April 13, Yerevan has been hit by a series of protests against Sargsyan's candidacy for the premiership.

"People go to him because they are confident he's not going to make secret deals with those in power, he won't betray the movement", Pogosyan told AFP. In 2008, following reports of widespread electoral fraud, sit-in protests formed in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia.

Asked last week if he was afraid of getting arrested, Pashinyan said: "In Armenia I feel comfortable everywhere, be it at home, on the street or in prison".

After that, however, the focus will shift to the future: On Wednesday, Pashinyan is set to meet Karen Karapetyan, the former prime minister who is now back in the job on an interim basis. He stated at the time that he "will not aspire" to the post of prime minister after completing his second presidential term on April 9, 2018.

"The street movement is against my tenure". Separately, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that the political transition is "our Armenian friends' business" and said the Kremlin is "pleased that the situation is not moving toward a destabilization".

Pashinyan said that the negotiations should discuss the transfer of power without shocks after the announced resignation of Sargsyan.

Pashinian has so far not offered any plan or vision for Armenia other than calling for the snap parliamentary election and making sure that none of Sargsyan's allies remain in office, preventing the former prime minister from pulling the strings from behind the scenes.

"I don't know any country where a prime minister is chosen like that".

Russian Federation offered tepid comments on the events in Armenia - rare for the Kremlin when one of its neighboring countries engages in pro-democracy activities.
