Emmanuel Macron said Thursday that France has "proof" that chemical weapons were used by the Syrian regime against rebels in Douma and he would make a decision "in due time" along with the USA on how to react.

"We have proof that last week chemical weapons, at least chlorine, were used by the regime of Bashar al-Assad", he said in a TV interview. He didn't elaborate on exactly what that proof is. Macron said he has been talking regularly this week with U.S. President Donald Trump about the most effective response.

President Trump has sent mixed messages on the US response, warning Russian Federation in a tweet Wednesday to "get ready" for USA missile strikes in Syria in retaliation for the attack.

The French leader, however, said on Thursday he would decide "in due course" whether to strike Syria.

It remains hard to place an exact figure on the number of people killed and wounded Saturday in the rebel-held town of Douma, on the outskirts of Damascus.

Macron stated that France has yet to determine a response to last week's attack.

The UN's World Health Organisation has requested access to verify reports that 70 people died, including 43 who showed "symptoms consistent with exposure to highly toxic chemicals". The global chemical watchdog said it would deploy a team to investigate.

There was no official announcement by Damascus that its forces had retaken the town of Douma, located near the capital Damascus, from rebels.

The prince, widely known as MBS, is also expected to meet some French ministers, a source close to his delegation told AFP. Macron hosted a gala send-off dinner for the crown prince at the Elysee Palace.

Both Syria and Russian Federation, its biggest supporter, have denied involvement in the attack, instead claiming that rebel groups had fabricated it to thwart the advances of Syrian troops and provoke global military intervention.
