The White House said Libby had served "more than a decade of honorable service" before his conviction, that his record is "unblemished" since, and that he "continues to be held in high regard by his colleagues and peers".

Former Vice President Dick Cheney issued a warm statement in support of President Donald Trump's pardon for his former aide Scooter Libby.

Trump released a statement through the White House that he did not personally know Libby but that the man had been treated unfairly. This comes 11 years after Libby was found guilty of obstructing justice and lying to the FBI during an investigation into who revealed the identity of a former Central Intelligence Agency agent.

Trump has already signed off on the pardon - a move he has been considering for months, ABC News reported.

"On the day the President wrongly attacks Comey for being a "leaker and liar" he considers pardoning a convicted leaker and liar, Scooter Libby", Rep. Adam B. Schiff, D-Calif., wrote on Twitter. No one was ever charged for the leak.

Under questioning, he said he would be unlikely to resign as secretary of state if Trump were to fire Mueller. Pompeo suggests the US needs to impose more sanctions on Russian Federation .

In a statement, Libby thanked Trump, saying his family has "suffered under the weight of a bad injustice". Mr. Libby, prosecutors said, lied about where he learned of her identity and what he discussed with reporters.

The ink on the pardon was barely dry, however, when critics began saying that President Trump had pardoned Libby to signal to those facing charges in Robert Mueller's Russian Federation probe that he will pardon them, too, if they are convicted.

The chief federal prosecutor in Libby's case was Patrick Fitzgerald, then the USA attorney from the Northern District of IL. Asked if a pardon would be about Comey, Conway said no.

"One thing has nothing to do with the other", she said.

He added that Trump is "essentially developing a coalition of extremists".

But he said it was "intellectually bankrupt" to expect the security services to lay out all the information they have. There have been calls from opposition parties and some Conservative MPs for Parliament to have a vote beforehand.

Plame appeared on MSNBC Friday morning and said a pardon would send a message "that you can commit crimes against national security and you will be pardoned".

Libby's attorneys, Joseph diGenova and Victoria Toensing, issued a statement thanking Mr Trump for "addressing a gross injustice" they said was inflicted by Mr Fitzgerald and Mr Comey. Because after leaving jail and investigating the case, I unearthed information that convinced me not only that my testimony was in error, but that Libby was the victim of an overzealous prosecutor whose investigation should have ended before it began.

Six months later, the New York Times published an opinion piece by Wilson, the former ambassador.

Hours later, the pardon for Libby, a convicted perjurer in an investigation initiated by Comey about leaking, was made public.

Plame's identity, it turned out, was leaked to journalist Robert Novak not by the White House, but by Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage. Manafort has since been charged with more than a dozen offenses, while Flynn has pleaded guilty to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
