She was elected to Congress in 1986 after having served in the New York State Assembly for four years and the Monroe County Legislature for three years before that.

"There's no monolithic way that women respond to this", she said at the time, referring to the harassment allegations.

Louise Slaughter (D) died at the age of 88 after a fall that prompted her hospitalization. "She will be greatly missed".

Initially one of just 29 women in the House of Representatives, Slaughter was a flinty advocate of women's access to health care and abortion.

According to her office, "in 2009, she secured the recall and replacement of 16,000 pieces of unsafe body armor from the front lines". She co-authored the Violence Against Women Act, landmark legislation that sought to crack down on domestic violence.

Slaughter was also a leading advocate for helping the Affordable Care Act pass in 2010. The legislation was passed in 2008, and was hailed by the late Sen.

It's unclear, however, what exactly caused her death.

An aggressive politician who was not afraid to butt heads with other lawmakers, Slaughter nonetheless won the respect of her colleagues with her hard work and her persistence. Slaughter spent years trying to set safety standards for military body armor after a report revealed that many casualties in the Iraq War had been born of the fact that the protective armor troops were wearing was inadequate. She brought the grace and grit of her Southern background to her leadership in the Congress, building bridges and breaking down barriers all with her lovely accent.

Dorothy Louise McIntosh was born in Harlan County, in southeastern Kentucky, on August 14, 1929.

Slaughter received her Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology and a Master of Science degree in Public Health from the University of Kentucky. She once called the arts "the only thing that I know that tells us who we were and who we are and who we hope to be". Survivors include three daughters; seven grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
