With growth in jobs tied to food services, accommodations, construction and professional services, Florida posted a 3.9 percent unemployment rate for the first month of 2018, representing 397,000 Floridians qualifying as unemployed from a workforce of 10.15 million.

The recalculations showed for the fourth consecutive year that the jobless rate wasn't quite as improved as initially thought for much of 2017.

January unemployment estimates for other states in the region were 2.6 percent in New Hampshire, 2.9 percent in Vermont, 3.5 percent in MA, 4.5 percent in Rhode Island and 4.5 percent in CT, the department said.

Self-employed people, like proprietors or independent contractors, are not accounted for in unemployment figures, however.

The state unemployment rate is tied for the fourth lowest rate in the country. The leisure and hospitality sector saw the second-largest numeric growth, for an increase of 1,300 jobs or 1.4 percent.

Accommodations and food services have also shown strong signs of growth with 3,600 jobs added since past year.

Employment in educational and health services increased by 3,000. On the other hand, retail trade lost more jobs than seasonally expected in January (-1,400).

Florida's housing market also remains strong as median home prices rose $20,000 across the state in the past year.

Mitch Kokai, policy analyst for conservative think tank John Locke Foundation, said that while the unemployment rate has been stable, "the interesting developments in recent months have taken place in job creation and labor force participation".

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) had more bad news for the legal industry on Friday.

These and other moves boosted the number of U.S. troops in Afghanistan by at least 3,500 to a total of more than 14,000. It marks Mattis' third visit to the country, where about 11,000 US troops are stationed.
