A recent Vanderbilt University poll found that 61 percent of Nashvillians approved of Barry, and after her announcement, billboards sprung up across the city in support of the mayor.

"Thank you judge", Barry, appearing in a black dress, said after entering the plea.

Barry, a Democrat who was elected in September 2015, is the first Nashville mayor to leave office before the expiration of his or her term in almost a century.

Vice Mayor David Briley is expected to take office immediately after being sworn in. Reports also allege that Barry and Forrest often traveled alone without additional security or staff. Forrest, who is also married, retired January 17 after reports of the relationship emerged.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has opened a probe into Barry's conduct to determine if there was any wrongdoing.

At one point, authorities searched Forrest's phone, discovering nude photos and chat logs that reportedly contained evidence of crimes.

Overall, both Nashvillians said they felt Barry brought a lot of positive things to the city.

Increasingly, Nashville's political leaders have expressed frustration about the scandal, calling it a black-eye on a city that has raised its national profile.

"I don't know the in-depth of what's going on with the felony charges, but if you look into what I'm trying to say - these things have happened many times before with men", Brown said.

However, a report by USA Today Network-Tennessee revealed that Forrest racked up hundreds of hours of overtime by escorting Barry to hot yoga classes and hockey games, late-night concerts and downtown restaurants.

He was also sentenced to three years of probation. Some Democrats referred to the mayor as a rising star in politics.

"While my time today as your mayor concludes, my unwavering love and honest affection for this wonderful city and its great people will never come to an end", Barry said on Tuesday shortly after a court appearance.

The council no longer has that power, but multiple council members had been looking at a non-binding resolution that would have called for Barry's resignation.

She said nothing illegal took place during the affair and that the relationship with Forrest has since ended. Nine of the trips were only attended by Barry and Forrest. She apologized for her personal failings.

Forrest, who served as the leader of the mayoral security detail for 14 years, left his position as well. Barry wished him and others well as she resigned. Barry said the affair began in spring 2016, an affidavit said. During that time, their romantic affiliations allegedly occurred on the clock and therefore, resulted in the theft of property from the Metro Nashville city funds amounted to $10,000 spent in the relationship. The photos were allegedly taken when the mayor and Forrest were on a trip together.
