The right-hander was among several top free agents who didn't get a deal for six or seven years in a changing offseason market. The Cubs reportedly reached out to Arrieta before signing Darvish to offer a deal in case Darvish rejected the Cubs' offer.

It was recently reported that Arrieta was close to signing with Philadelphia.

The Philadelphia Phillies have an "agreement in principle" on a multi-year deal with free agent pitcher Jake Arrieta, according to NBC Sports Philadelphia. In that event, Arrieta would earn $20 million per season for those two years, with incentives that could drive it up to $25 million per season.

After months of wondering whether it would happen, Arrieta officially agreed to a three-year, $75 million deal with the Phillies to bring expectations for Gabe Kapler's team to a whole new level heading into the 2018 season.

It remains to be seen if Arrieta will be ready in time to join the Phillies rotation to start the season.

He turned 32 years old last week. Since Arrieta turned down a qualifying offer with Chicago, the Phils will need to surrender their second best draft pick if they want to sign Arrieta, as well as $500,000 from their worldwide signing bonus stockpile. The Phillies have long made it clear that length of deal is more of a concern with them than money. In his impressive Cy Young Award-winning year in 2015, he was 22-6 with a sparkling 1.77 ERA.
