Cut T20Is to reduce schedule, says Bayliss

New Zealand qualified for the final of the tri-nation Twenty20 series despite losing their final round-robin match to England by two runs in Hamilton on Sunday.

England will take solace from their one-day form as Ben Stokes returns for the series against New Zealand.

With three defeats so far, captain Eoin Morgan knows his side need to win by likely around 20 runs or successfully chase a target with two to three overs to spare in order to overtake the now second-placed co-hosts on net run rate.

A day after England coach Trevor Bayliss called for an end to T20 worldwide cricket, New Zealand coach Mike Hesson defended the shortest format on Monday by saying that T20 had an important role to play internationally.

"Not that good", Morgan said when asked how he felt.

But in the end, it was Braun Strowman who triumphed and as he does - left a serious mark. The match ran for around 101 minutes, with 65 minutes of that involving Seth Rollins .

"We had absolutely no right to be in the final".

"174 was the target we were trying to defend".

The hosts surged past that mark thanks to Colin Munro's 57 from 21 balls and Martin Guptill's 62 off 47 at Hamilton.

"I can't see the point of going through all the hassle and all the criticism of getting him out here when some have felt, 'No, don't!' And then asking him to carry the drinks".

Morgan and Malan put on 93 for the third wicket in an England innings otherwise punctuated by the fall of regular wickets.

New Zealand's move to shore up the batting also paid off as former Hong Kong worldwide Mark Chapman made a useful cameo of 20 off 13 on his New Zealand debut.

Both of England's openers fell early as Alex Hales and Jason Roy fell to slower balls from Tim Southee and Trent Boult. We got off to a reasonable start. But though New Zealand clinched its place in the final when it edged past 175, it wasn't able to complete a winning run chase. "The coach wasn't overly amused by the way they bowled".

Ben Stokes has finally linked up with his England team-mates after landing in New Zealand on Friday. He allowed only a single boundary and denied Colin de Grandhomme who needed to hit four from the last ball. We haven't been good enough. Nonetheless, 1,057 days since the game's flagship tournament was last staged in 2015, we are beginning to see a gap emerge within the elite division of teams in the one-day game.

"Spirits are high in our camp and guys are looking forward to the final".
