17-year-old teenager Red Gerard delivered the first medal of the 2018 Olympic Games for the United States, and he did so with a stellar slopestyle run in a do-or-die situation.

Gerard stumbled his way through his opening two runs at tricky, windy and sun-splashed Phoenix Snow Park.

Parrot put down a near-flawless run as the last rider to go down, but it wasn't good enough to knock Gerard off the top spot.

Parrot washed out in his first two runs but nailed his final trip through the tricky series of rails and jumps to post a score of 86.00.

Gerard shook Bach's hand, said nice to meet you, and trotted back toward the finish area where the three men who were supposed to beat him took the final three runs of the competition.

Gerard took first place in the men's slopestyle snowboarding event. First, Red told NBC after his win that he was "super groggy" when he woke up and "didn't want to get out of bed"-what 17-year-old hasn't been there?"

"They really kind of killed it on this course I would have thought the Olympics, FIS, it would have been standard rails and standard hits".
