Eastern Ghouta, Syria reduced to ruins by Assad regime

President Bashar al-Assad has in recent days been sending reinforcements from across the country to the edge of Eastern Ghouta, besieged by regime troops since 2013.

More than 100 civilians are believed to have died in overnight raids near Damascus, as Syrian government forces prepare a ground operation to recapture opposition-held Eastern Ghouta.

Around 250 civilians were killed in a wave of government bombardment on the rebel-held region this month, and about 20 in retaliatory fire on Damascus itself.

Air strikes have intensified and killed more than 300 people this month, in what appears to be a prelude to a ground offensive that could start any day.

The European Union's foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini and European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianides also issued a joint written statement late Monday regarding the humanitarian situation in Eastern Ghouta and Idlib.

While the Syrian military has not commented, the government said it only targets militants.

The two main factions in Ghouta, which include Failaq al-Rahman, accuse Moscow and the Syrian army of breaching the de-escalation agreements.
