Actor Minnie Driver has stepped down as the ambassador of Oxfam International, after supporting the charity for 20 years, amid sex scandal claims hit the organisation.

The British charity is accused of concealing the findings of an inquiry into claims staff used prostitutes while delivering aid in Haiti in 2011.

Scotland's worldwide development minister, Alasdair Allan, has held crisis talks with Oxfam seeking assurances that projects involving the Scottish Government are not caught up in the charity's prostitution scandal.

The 48-year-old actress has worked with the charity for over 20 years but has chose to step down after a recent investigation revealed an alleged cover-up of aid workers' use of prostitutes in Haiti.

In a tweet, she said: "All I can tell you about this bad revelation about Oxfam is that I am devastated".

However, she added that the "abhorrent mistakes of a troubling organization" would not stop her in her charity work.

"Oxfam was more concerned about the charity's reputation than the people who were exploited".

The allegations centre around Roland van Hauwermeiren who was Oxfam's country director for Haiti and was previously the head of the charity's mission in Chad.

The commission's deputy chief executive David Holdsworth said: "Charities and dedicated, hard-working aid workers undertake vital, lifesaving work in some of the most hard circumstances across the world".

"We regret that we did not act on Helen's concerns much quicker and with more resources", the statement said, adding it was now expanding the safeguarding team.

"It's a pretty huge story and is very shocking and horrifying to everybody involved, including of course Oxfam staff who work tirelessly on issues of women's rights and gender equality", Ms. Delahanty said in an interview. All I can say is that we are working to rebuild that trust.

"They knew what happened and they even said one of the reasons they did not report to the Haitian authorities is that they believed nothing would have been been done", he said.

The Times newspaper reported on Friday that some Oxfam staff paid for sex with prostitutes in Haiti after the country's 2010 quake.

"We take sexual misconduct and the safeguarding of children, young people and vulnerable adults extremely seriously and do not tolerate any misconduct of this kind", he said.

That has other aid organizations desperately trying to distance themselves from Oxfam GB, fearing they, too, may lose government funding and donations.

Yesterday a Scottish Government spokesperson said: "The Scottish Government is deeply concerned by the reports of serious misconduct by Oxfam staff in Haiti".

The French charity told AFP it made pre-employment checks with Oxfam but that the UK-based organisation failed to pass on details of his transgressions.
