A mosque bombing in Libya's second city of Benghazi has killed one person and wounded more than 62 people, the city's hospital has said.

He said according to preliminary investigations, the bombing was carried out remotely.

On January 23, two vehicle bombs exploded outside a mosque, killing at least 34 people, including children, and injuring 90 others.

Mr Agouri said the bombs were planted in separate rooms inside the mosque.

Benghazi is controlled by the Libyan National Army, which is led by powerful eastern-based commander Khalifa Haftar and was battling Islamists and other opponents in the port city until late 2017.

"Direct or indiscriminate attacks against civilians are prohibited under worldwide humanitarian law and constitute war crimes", the mission added, calling for "prompt, impartial investigations to bring perpetrators to justice".

The LNA was battling militants, including some linked to Islamic State and al Qaeda, as well as other opponents until late previous year in the Mediterranean port city.

Haftar launched his military campaign in Benghazi in May 2014 in response to a series of bombings and assassinations blamed on extremists.

In past months there have been occasional, smaller scale bombings apparently targeting LNA allies or supporters.

The UN has been trying to mediate for years, hoping elections could help stabilise Libya.

Mutaz al-Mu'tri, Benghazi's security directorate spokesperson, said two bomb bags had been used in the attack, according to Libya's 218 tv news channel.
